Council Member Nantasha Williams hosted a Land Use 101 online information session on February 8th. The event was free and accessible through Zoom.
The event’s goal was to share valuable information on land use in New York City. The event included a discussion of the seven-month-long Uniformed Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) process.
One of the workshop’s partners – the Municipal Arts Society – discussed their Livable Neighborhoods Program (LNP) – a grant-funded initiative focused on “helping New Yorkers become stronger advocates for their neighborhoods” through educational programs.
Also discussed was the Jamaica neighborhood plan – a rezoning effort that covers three hundred blocks, including the Jamaica Avenue, Merrick Boulevard, and Hillside Avenue major corridors.
Council Member Nanatasha Williams shared her insights on the importance of such events. “I know we have been educating the community on the process, but I also want you all to get information from an independent party,” Williams stated. “So you don’t feel information is being given to you in a swayed manner. I think it’s very important for the community to fully understand the process so that we all can put our best foot forward and know where to push and know how to best place their concerns and recommendations to make our community better than what it already is.”
