Black Spectrum Hosts “Stop the Gentrification at Roy Wilkins Park” Town Hall

The Black Spectrum Theatre hosted “Stop the Gentrification at Roy Wilkins Park” on November 13th. The event was free and open to the public.

The goal of the event was to tell the community about upcoming projects at the Southern Queens Parks Association (SQPA). Some participants shared the belief that as the only black-led park in the area, it is important to maintain a certain degree of autonomy. One of the association’s goals is to eliminate the park event permitting restrictions that have recently been put in place. According to some, lifting these restrictions will allow park leadership to better serve the community.

James Johnson, Chair of the Southern Queens Park Association, gave his input on why serving the community is important. “Southern Queens Park Association knows the makeup of the community,” Johnson stated. “It’s a black non-profit. So opportunity and resources such as after school programs and summer employment help keep children off the streets.”
