Who announces – at work – that they recently got engaged, and then invites their fiancé to the stage so she can share with the audience what makes her future husband special? Who does that? Khaleel Anderson does. And why would the New York State Assembly Member representing the 31st Assembly District do this? There is only one reason. Because Khaleel Anderson sees the residents of his district not as constituents, but members of his extended family.
Clearly, this is why his State of the District Address – held at 6:30 pm on Friday, February 27th at Far Rockaway’s The Bay School (P.S. 105Q) – felt more like a backyard barbecue than a formal, stuffy affair.

The announcement of his recent engagement followed an evening that included everything from remarks made by the Assembly Member’s mama, to the distribution of checks – or funding announcements – for local schools and organizations.
There was no need to recount accomplishments during this State of the District address, because they were outlined in a printed End-of-Year Community Service Report (see the report here) distributed to all who were in attendance. That document included a staff directory, a list of legislative highlights (including descriptions of some of the 213 bills that Assembly Member Anderson introduced or co-sponsored in 2025), a community service report highlighting resident issues addressed/resolved, a community impact, and a social media analysis.
Other highlights included greetings from New York City Public Advocate Jumanne Williams, and a visit from the newly minted New York City Council Member from The Great 28 – Ty Hankerson. Braata Productions’ Andrew Clarke led the Star Spangled Banner as well as every verse of the Black National Anthem – Lift Every Voice and Sing. The evening wrapped up with a performance by the Taranng Dance Troupe.
