New York State Assembly Member Alicia L. Hyndman hosted “Keep Merrick Boulevard Clean” on September 20th from 8 AM to 12 PM. The free and open-to-the-public event was presented in partnership with New York City Council Member Selvena Brooks Powers, the Department of Sanitation, 100Suits, and SEQ Clean Up Initiative.
Volunteers convened with the Department of Sanitation outside of Assembly Member Hyndman’s office, before being dispatched to pick up trash along Merrick Boulevard from Springfield to the Cross Island.
The event also featured guest appearances from DJ Nett’s Nettworkinc program – which provides youth programs to support academics and introduce young people to the art of DJing. A few of her students were in attendance, spinning on the 1’s and 2’s, playing great Afrobeats Music.
DJ Nett shared why this event is so important for the neighborhood: “Well, look around, we definitely need to do a deep clean of our streets,” Nett stated. “We want to give back to the community and let them know that we care. We have numerous black businesses along Merrick, and they need a clean, well-maintained space to advertise their shops.”
