“Colors in Black” Exhibition at the Roy Wilkins Park Recreation Center

Colors in Black – the Southern Queens Park Association’s 22nd annual art exhibition – opened on Sunday, March 1st in the Roy Wilkins Park Recreation Center.

The show features the work of over 96 talented artists from all over New York City. New to the show this year are the artists Hollis King and Sherwin Banfield.

Show veterans include the artists Jennifer and Rod Ivey, Julia Shaw, Wanda Best, Shenna Vaughn, Lyvan Munlyn, Carl McIntosh, and Damali Abrams, among others.

For the first time, the show includes a collection of photographs of members of the Divine Nine (the nine historically Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities comprising the National Pan-Hellenic Council) – photographed by kids participating in the Southeast Queens Camera Club’s kids photography program.

For the 9th year in a row, the exhibition has been curated by Master Curator Olney Marie Ryland – an “architectural artist” whose work is also featured in the show.

According to Olney Marie, “My art journey started at five years old when I served as an apprentice to my father who had a carpentry shop.” Several works from Olney Marie’s Urban Facades collection are in the show.

The exhibit closes on Saturday, March 7th. The hours for the exhibit – which is being presented in the rec center’s gymnasium – are Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
