Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers hosted her annual District 31 Community Turkey Giveaway – this time, over the course of three days.
Lines of constituents interested in receiving a free turkey formed in front of the Polish Lounge on November 20th, Council Member Brooks-Powers District Office on the 21st, and the King of Kings Foundation on the 23rd. Free turkeys were available to folks who live within Councilmanic District 31. After signing in, each family received their turkey.
Council Member Brooks-Powers shared why she holds the event annually. “Before being elected we went through COVID,” Powers stated. “And I saw a need for food security. It existed before COVID but it was exacerbated during COVID. I remember being right here doing a food distribution and seeing the line wrap around the block. Then I was talking to the residents. I saw that families are trying to make ends meet but are really struggling to have food on the table. So this is our way of helping prevent that!”
