New York City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams (District 28), Council Member Selvena N. Brooks-Powers (District 31), and Council Member Nantasha Williams (District 27), partnered with CUNY Citizenship Now! to host Become a Citizen: Opportunities Await on January 11th at the York College Gymnasium. The event was free and open to the public.
Attendees were given application assistance from members of the CUNY Citizenship Now! Group.
Monique Francis of CUNY Citizenship Now! shared insight on why this event was important. “Well, knowing the current political climate and who is coming into office, people are scared of deportation,” Francis stated. “The only way to prevent that from happening is to become a United States citizen. However, we know it’s difficult. Not everyone has the resources. So we want to change that.”
