Idlewild Environment Science Center Hosts MLK Jr. Day of Service

The Idlewild Environmental Science Center hosted its MLK Jr. Day of Service on January 15th at their main site. Teenagers were the focus of the event.

The event began with a youth workshop about Dr. Martin Luther King and his theories on environmentalism. After the workshop, teenagers went to Idlewild Park to help clean the area. They also worked on the center’s new community peace garden. Two benches donated by the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. were unveiled during the day.

Barbara Brown, President of the Idlewild Environmental Center, explained what the event means to her. “For one thing, it’s a day of service,” Brown stated. “People should be volunteering for the betterment of our community. We need to be more focused on our environment. Especially air quality. We are adjacent to JFK, so we are worried about noise and how it impacts people’s health.”
