The King Manor Museum hosted an opening party for its latest exhibition – Jamaica | Jamaica – on August 16th. The event was free and open to the public.
Taking inspiration from the Jamaican national motto, “Out of Many, One People,” the exhibition highlights the country’s rich and diverse heritage – mirrored in the vibrant culture of Southeast Queens – and explores the history of Jamaican immigration to New York City and the lasting impact of Jamaican culture on the local community.
The party was hosted by VP Records, one of the biggest distributors of Reggae music in the country.
DJ Killa Boo, a host on Irie Jam Radio and a prominent DJ in the reggae scene, made an appearance alongside some fantastic local food vendors. People were able to enjoy great live performances and guest speakers while savoring their favorite Caribbean cuisine, including jerked chicken. New York City Council Member Selvena Brooks Powers and New York State Assembly Member Alicia L. Hyndman both made appearances.
Kelsey Brow, King Manor’s Executive Director, shared why she looked forward to this event. “Well, personally, I love to experience different kinds of cultures,” Brow stated. “And today we got a great sense of Caribbean culture that isn’t celebrated as much on Jamaica Avenue. With all of the culture of this great avenue changing over time, it’s fun to keep the roots of what makes Jamaica Avenue so special still alive.”
