National Night National Night Out is an annual community outreach event organized by the police, aimed at strengthening their relationships with local communities. The night out has been held on the first Tuesday of August since 1983, with the 42nd one scheduled for August 5, 2025.
The officers involved in the night out believe it is a great event for both the precinct and the community, with officers having a great time, cooking, and serving the people at the event. Some of the officers present believe it’s an important event because it brings the community together, particularly in cases of crime, where community members are often reluctant to talk to and cooperate with the police. Having these events allows for the communities to see that the police are there to help them, and makes them more likely to trust their local police.
At the event, there were over 12 stands, representing local organizations and local businesses, including Starbucks. Emblem Health, Community Board 13, Bayside Glen Oaks Ambulance, Vision Zero, New York Life, NYS Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, and the Auxiliary Police. Various stands were present, promoting not only their organizations but also raising awareness about various topics of interest to the residents. For example, New York Life shared its insurance products. Bayside Glen Oaks Ambulance demonstrated how to perform CPR on adult and baby models, which could be critical or even lifesaving in situations where someone is facing a medical emergency and needs help before an ambulance can arrive. Among the stands was also a representative from State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky’s office. To show appreciation for the precinct’s efforts, the Senator donated $10,000 from her discretionary funds to the 105th precinct.
Across the nation, precincts host these night out celebrations. In NYC, all 78 police precincts participate in a night out event for their communities.
