The Lower East Side Ecology Center and New York State Senator Leroy Comrie hosted an electronic waste recycling event on November 18th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Roy Wilkins Park.
Attendees could bring unwanted electronics to the park and discard them in a safe way. People brought televisions, old telephones, and old computers to the site.
One of the E-Waste Associates, Oliver Clark, provided insight on why the event is important. “E-waste events are very important for everyone,” Clark stated. “We can make proper e-waste recycling more affordable and accessible.” The e-waste technician, Nicole Swient, gave information on the perilous alternatives to not recycling responsibly. “One of the major benefits of these events is that we eliminate these products from going into our landfills. Electronic waste makes up almost 70 percent of the harmful materials that are there,” Swient stated. “If not taken care of properly, it can find its way into groundwaters.”
