State Senator Comrie’s Rain Barrel Giveaway

Sen. Leroy Comrie, in partnership with the New York City Park Department of Environmental Protection and the New York Police Department Explorers Post 2241, hosted their Rain Barrel Giveaway on July 15 at Detective Keith Williams Park. The purpose of the event was to hand out rain barrels to promote water conservation.

Each attendee could receive one barrel to take home to collect water. New York State Senate Chief of Staff Derrick Davis described the importance of this event.

“Southeast Queens is prone to flooding,” said Davis. “And as we have seen in recent news reports, flooding has been a major cause for damage around the city and in the state of New York. So the bigger purpose of this is to try to help stop some of the flooding by having people recycle water and use it for washing their cars, watering their lawns and things of that nature.” Davis said collecting water would help minimize the impact of extreme weather events.

expressed the importance of this by stating “This will help minimize the impacts of these.”
