The Jamaica Center of Arts and Learning hosted an opening reception for Ancestral Nourishment on November 17th. The event was free and open to the public and appropriate for all ages. The exhibit involved work from twenty-five artists to make sixty pieces for the gallery.
The goal of the exhibit was to celebrate artists’ roots and culture that we normally would not know about. The artists showed their works in different mediums but mainly paint.
The exhibit included work from Alejandro Pinzón, Ameila Inderjeit, Anjeanette Ang, Annie Del Hierro, Anurima Kumar, Audrey Rodriguez, Carolina Amarillo, Christian Chang, Elizabeth Velazquez, Ellie Reynoso De La Rosa, Garry Grant, Ida Owens, Kadiatou Coulibaly, Karen Sonilall, Katie Frank, LisaMaria Maya, Marcy Chevali, Mellisa Severino, My Tien Pham, Nadia Misir, Raqeebah Zaman, Samantha Rae Hosein, Seema Shakti, Shvadre Stiffend, Sita Sunil, and Tariq Julfiker.
Visual Voices curator, Seema Shakti Choudhary, explained the vision of the show. “The theme is about celebrating and uplifting people’s backgrounds,” Choudhary stated. “Everything about our roots and ancestry is important. There are a lot of moments going on, and especially what’s happening everywhere in the world where it can feel like humanity is lost. Because of that people feel isolated. This is just a reminder that you are not alone.”
