The Jamaica Center of Arts and Learning recently hosted its first Thursday Night Jazz Festival performance of the 2023-2024 season. Gabriel Chakaraji and Juan Diego Villalobosom took the stage on October 12th.
The Thursday Night Jazz Festival is a free featured Jazz performance open to the public every second Thursday of every month. According to Curator Rio Sakairi, JCAL is offering “Cutting-edge contemporary Jazz from October until May.”
The audience was first greeted with refreshments at the door, including chips, wine, and wraps. They then proceeded to the auditorium to watch the performance.
Gabriel Chakaraji and Juan Diego Villalobosom state their music goes both forward and back in time and explores the folk-origin music of Venezuelan roots with contemporary timbre and rhythm. Their music combines Venezuelan folk music and modern-day sounds, creating “a unique sound that appeals to audiences of all ages.”
